The oDesk Story

Odysseas Tsatalos had cofounded a startup in Silicon Valley, California, but in 2002 he found himself in need of a world-class engineer with a specific skill set. He immediately thought of his friend, Stratis Karamanlakis, a perfect fit for the role. There was just one problem — Stratis was located in Greece with no intention to relocate and Odysseas’ team was hesitant to hire someone half a world away.

To bridge the distance and convince the company that a remote engineer could be just as productive and trustworthy as someone sitting in the office, Odysseas and Stratis developed a technology to help monitor progress and collaborate remotely. The system’s visibility and accountability converted all skeptics, and a beautiful remote work relationship was born.

But the platform was destined for greater things. Realizing the value and potential of what they had created, Odysseas and Stratis shifted gears and oDesk was born. In 2005, the technology became the backbone of a new online workplace, and the company took off virtually overnight, doubling in size each year since. And, as they say, the rest is history.
